Among the Women

Growing up I was shown
the cards
by many crones.
I was taught to gamble well
and to at least hold my own.
I learned of love
and the promise broken,
long before its breaking.
My fortune was foretold to me:
A future vast and open.
They were my very first charmers,
women with the spirit.
They believed in elves and wood sprites,
and left the Easter Bunny carrots.
These women gave me the second sight
and taught me not to fear it.
My maternal grandma’s mom,
and my dad’s great auntie Joan,
my friend’s two aunts and grandma
taught me in their homes
with nothing more than tea and paper.
They left their porch lights on.
