Winter Begins

Please give me wintermint
to cool my longing
for longer days of sunshine and warmth.
All in good time
when the bees can once again
rest in the center of the flower.
Today is for festivities
found in the night,
like candlelight and wine
and the bite of old cheeses.

Dancing alone I am reminded
of social circles in the garden,
gathering by the pond
for talking and singing.
For now, give me holly and mistletoe berries
grown on snow and ice.
