Creature Comforts

Wrap the wool drape
close around your heart.
Let the warmth collect in your chest
and move like liquid honey
outward to your extremities.

We are here because of cups of tea,
a pan of fire lent or borrowed,
garden peas, leaves, and carrots,
food shared, and pulling together.

Wipe the cool cloth
across your forehead.
Let your tuckered heart ease,
and mend, and rest.
Tomorrow we work again
and until then be at peace.

These simple slippers
may keep the cold and flu from my feet,
save my skin from thorns
or the blistering heat.
I offer you olives, and water, and sweet.
We are simple animals
with a few needs to meet.
