A poem from Undertow, along with two other songs with lyrics by PJ Thomas, are featured on Rick Fines’ new album Solar Powered Too available at rickfines.ca
Update: March 2021, Solar Powered Too has been nominated for a Juno Award.
“the songs have Fines’ relaxed warmth, highlighted by his storyteller vocals and guitar ease… I like the mix of solo and accompanied tracks, and as always with Fines, the overall top quality of singing, writing and playing.” Bob Mersereau, Top 100 -Canada
The poetry of Canadian author, PJ Thomas is exciting and new. Formerly an arts administrator and newspaper editor, Thomas turned to write novels and then began to write poetry in May 2018. She has been published in The River Magazine, Arthur Newspaper, and by the Poet Laureate of Cobourg, ON in the online Poetry Present.
Award-winning recording artist, Rick Fines set one of Thomas’s poems, Fundamental Nature, to music, sparking a fruitful co-writing arrangement. Three of PJ’s song lyrics were produced on the critically-acclaimed new album, Solar Powered Too. This promising collection has been nominated for a 2021 Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year.
PJ’s sparse poem, Red Moon, was accepted last year by songwriter Benj Rowland for a haunting collaborative piece. Rowland and Thomas have again combined their work this year for the song, Alone.
Thomas’s new digital work, Over and Under: Two Recitals is featured in the 2021 Festival of Light and Dark. This online festival showcases the work of 13 artists and is hosted by the 4th Line Theatre Company until June 25th.
Ms. Thomas has worked with the newly emerging PAJE Press to publish her debut book of poetry, Undertow. This volume was launched October 7, 2020, at a Public Watch Party on Facebook. Over 1,000 people tuned-in to the launch. Undertow is available for purchase here on this website.
Nine of PJ’s poems were produced in the performance piece, The Clarity of Brightness by the dance company, These Are Horizon Days, in 2019. This show will be remounted at the Peterborough, ON new dance festival, Emergency # 23.
